San Francisco General Hospital, Learning Center
The second floor of historic ZSFG Building 30 was re-purposed to be the new SFGH Learning Center for UCSF. The Learning Center is a ground-breaking new way to deliver simulation training programs and didactic educational programs as a part of the Hospital’s training and continuing education system.
In a series of interactive, interdisciplinary work sessions with the SF Department of Public Works, SFGH Facilities Management, and UCSF Learning Center, LDA quickly developed a program and conceptual design that would minimize construction time, avoid disruption to other building tenants, and improve accessibility while managing project cost.
The primary characteristic feature of the space design is an open architecture concept, with
minimal walls and partitions within the space to provide maximum flexibility for reconfiguring space to
accommodate areas of teaching, practice, observation and debriefing.
LDA turned the downsides of working in an existing infrastructure into opportunities by making them part of
the design. The Learning Center was completed in early 2012, turning around this project from concept to
full use in about one year and 10% below budget projections.
The new facility accommodating the ever-changing state of technologies to offer inspiration and realistic training environments is enthusiastically received by campus facilities management and user groups.
